Research conducted by Opinium on behalf of Asda Money Travel Insurance, highlights the weird, worrying and downright woeful things that have happened to British holidaymakers whilst abroad.

It’s been found that 10 million people head on holiday without cover in place each year, costing UK families in the region of £976 million collectively and less than half of those who incurred a cost from their accident (48%) made a claim meaning they were left with a large bill.

Contracting an illness or virus (9%) is the most common worst mishap that happens to Brits or their family members when on holiday. The top worst things that have happened to Brits and their family on holiday include:

  • Contracting an illness or virus (9%)
  • Drinking too much alcohol (8%)
  • Sun stroke (8%)

Of those to which a mishap has occurred, over two thirds (70%) said that it happened to themselves, followed by their partner (11%) and their child (4%).
