Millions drive or get lifts to work because there is no public transport

Research conducted by Opinium, on behalf of Direct Line, found that more than ten million Brits have to drive or get lifts to work because there is no public transport.

Of those who do have access to public transport (80% of adults in modern Britain) up to 1.5 million need to use three different buses, trains or trams to get from their home to their nearest town centre. Furthermore, 18% have to use a car to get to their nearest supermarket and 14% have no other way than to drive if they want to go to their doctor.

When looking at those who cannot get to work via public transport our survey shows 30% of adults in Wales cannot, followed by 27% in Northern Ireland and 25% in the South West.

Even those who do have access to public transport are not happy with it – 20% thinking it’s too expensive and 16% dissatisfied with the service.
